THE ALTITUDE XPERIENCE IN THE ANDES
Chibchi Fisha Altitude Camp is designed for athletes looking to increase their season’s fitness by training at altitude and for athletes who want to adapt to altitude before racing Chibchi Fisha.
There will be two training tracks for this camp. In the first days, all athletes will build into altitude with swim, bike, and run training designed to help you adjust and explore the area. Don’t worry, this is still an XTRI Xperience, so we begin by cycling one of the longest climbs in the world!
Athletes on the training camp track will increase the intensity and volume of training later in the camp, while athletes racing the next week have the option of a lighter training to taper into the race. The camp is ideal for athletes and supporters who want to experience Colombia together before the race.
We will also have presentations on altitude training, race course preview, and support from local guides. You will be fully immersed in Colombia’s unique cultures and the jaw-dropping Andes landscape.
ALTITUDE TRAINING AND PRE-RACE ADAPTATION
Training at moderate altitude (1,800 to 2,500 metres) has decades of evidence behind it as a method for building endurance fitness and improving performance. The camp hotel is located at 2500 metres, and we will train up to 3,500 metres. This is an ideal attitude for maximum adaptation.
Both training tracks at this camp are designed to harness those responses to support your training goals.
Athletes Racing: Pre-race adaptation
Arriving early at altitude is one of the most important things you can do to improve your racing at altitude. A few nights of acclimatisation above 2500m significantly reduce the risk of high-altitude side effects you might expereince during your race. Beyond reducing risk, the days at camp will give athletes measurable adaptations: stabilised breathing, improved sleep, and perceived effort on a climb settles closer to normal.
You will leave camp knowing how your body responds to altitude. You can go into the race knowing how your heart rate behaves, what nutrition works, and how to pace yourself.
Athletes Training: Building season fitness
For athletes targeting a peak race later in the season, this focused block at altitude is a perfect foundation to build from. Sessions are structured to maximize the altitude load, recovery is built into the schedule, and you leave camp with a foundation that pays off in the training blocks that follow.
